3 Mindset Shifts That Helped Me Step Back from Burnout
(Without Quitting My Job)
Spoiler alert: No, I didn’t escape to Bali. I didn’t take a sabbatical or live in a van. I was still teaching. But I made three small shifts in my mind that changed everything—and they might just help you too.
Teacher Burnout? Oh Yeah, I’ve Been There
I was this close to full-blown burnout.
You know the kind—where your to-do list makes you want to cry, the copier jams make you want to scream, and one more staff meeting might send you into early retirement (but not the kind with beaches and margaritas).
I was standing on the edge of the burnout cliff, staring down into the abyss of exhaustion, resentment, and "I can’t do this anymore." And then—miracle of miracles—I discovered something. It wasn’t a new planner, or more coffee, or even a better principal.
It was three mindset shifts.
I used to live by the gospel of the snooze button. “Just five more minutes” was my love language.
But here’s the truth: the first decision you make in the morning sets the tone for your entire day. And hitting snooze? That’s basically telling the universe, “No thanks, I’m not ready for life.” So I tried something different. I moved my phone to the other side of the room (I know—rude), and when that alarm went off, I got up.
✨ Not to be dramatic, but this one shift began a chain reaction.
I didn’t know it at the time, but hitting snooze actually messes with your brain’s chemistry. You start a new sleep cycle, wake up mid-cycle, and end up groggy and foggy for hours. That’s called sleep inertia—and it's basically your brain’s way of punishing you for pretending it’s still bedtime.
Instead, I chose to wake up with a thought like, “I’m grateful for another day” or “Let’s go do something good today.” It didn’t magically erase my problems, but it changed my starting line.
Before, my mornings were chaos: checking emails, listening to news headlines, and basically flooding my brain with cortisol before breakfast.
Now? I pop in my AirPods and cue up something motivational—podcasts, YouTube, affirmations, anything that fills my cup before I pour it out for everyone else. I call it mind-feeding before mind-leading. Even 10 minutes of positive input helps me feel more focused, more grounded, and less like I’m spiralling before 8 a.m. You wouldn't leave the house without coffee, right? Don’t leave your brain unfueled either.
Shift #3: Ask for Help (Yes, You’re Allowed)
This one hit hard.
For years, I thought asking for help made me look weak or incompetent. So I overworked, overthought, and overdelivered—until I was overwhelmed. The shift? Realizing that asking for help isn't a failure. It's a shortcut to success.
Whether it was figuring out how to set up Google Classroom or planning a lesson in half the time, I started asking, “Is there an easier way?” Spoiler: there usually was.
Sometimes that help came from a colleague. Sometimes from a YouTube video. But every time I reached out, I gained time, energy, and peace of mind. And the best part? I learned how to do things myself instead of waiting for someone to rescue me.
Bonus Realization: You Don’t Need to Be Perfect—Just Present
These shifts didn’t happen overnight. And some days, I still hit snooze, skip my podcast, and try to do everything myself. But then I remember:
“Today is a new day. I can start again.”
You don’t need to have it all figured out. You just need to keep coming back to yourself—with kindness, curiosity, and a little less pressure.
Want to Start Making Shifts Too?
Here are 3 quick ways to start:
✅ Move your alarm across the room and get up with intention
✅ Fill your morning with motivation—not notifications
✅ Ask for help (Google counts!) and simplify what’s overwhelming
Because burnout isn’t a badge of honor. It’s a warning sign. And these small mindset shifts? They’re your permission slip to turn things around.
Final Thoughts: You’re in Control of Your Mindset

No one is coming to save you (sorry), but that’s not bad news—it’s empowering.
You have the power to shift how you start your day, how you speak to yourself, and how you show up in the world.
You don’t have to wait for summer break to feel better.
➡️ You can shift your mindset.
➡️ You can change your story.
➡️ And it can start tomorrow morning—with just one less tap on the snooze button
